In the year 1857, when a revolt broke out against the British East India Company, three muslim scholar i.e Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki, Rashid Ahmad Gangohi and Muhammad Qasim Nanotvi rose against the company and defeated the British forces in a series of battles. But after their defeat, they moved on to start an Islamic revivalist movement which we today know as 'the Deobandi movement'.
